HANFORD + SUNSET BAY COASTAL ASSESSMENT
IRVING, NYWATERFRONT | NNBF
Status: In-Progress
Hanford and Sunset Bay have historically been popular beach destinations. However, increasing environmental challenges, including flooding and erosion, now pose significant threats to residential homes and recreational facilities. Cattaraugus Creek often floods during heavy rainfall and ice jams, putting homes and infrastructure at risk of damage. Additionally, large winter seiches have caused damage to local residences. Erosion is also a concern, especially with recent high lake levels, leading to the deterioration of the sandy shoreline in vulnerable coastal areas. Understanding erosion mechanisms, such as wave action and sediment transport, is crucial for developing effective mitigation strategies.
Proof Projects will work on conceptual alternatives for nature-based solutions in the coastal areas encompassing Hanford Bay and Sunset Bay communities. These strategies will address coastal erosion and enhance storm resilience while considering their ecological and social benefits.
